|Feature of the Month Harsdorffs Hus, Kongens Nytorv|
Throughout his career, architect Caspar Frederik Harsdorff became increasingly stronger in connection with Kongens Nytorv. Already in 1766 he was appointed professor in perspective at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 1770 he took over Jardin's position as court master and the year later his residence at Charlottenborg (in the south wing). Harsdorff was in the following years engaged in the conversion of the Royal Theater. Fate would be in 1777 he got a chance to build his own house on the square. At Charlottenborg there was a small house with the facade next to the classy space. Here, Academic Secretary C. E. Biehl had his residence and here, his daughter, the known author Charlotte Dorothea Biehl, had spent part of her childhood. After the death of C. E. Biehl, the house was to be torn down and Harsdorff consulted for a solution. He suggested that the space was provided to him to build a house at his own expense.
||Harsdorff knew very clearly what he was doing. The building should not only serve as a residence, but also be a program for new classicalism and a better interior design. In his application, Harsdorff wrote: "From the time of my return from Italy, I have been trying to suppress ... the ruined taste that still prevails among us in regard to the exterior of the bourgeois houses as well as the interior decoration and the distribution of rooms. Have not yet had the opportunity to build a citizen's house and, consequently, have not been able to confirm my reasons for examples, the oral evidence that I have used has also been of little use ... the external expulsions of the house as well as the composition should be quite new ".||The king blessed him favorably the foundation of 1779 and 1780, the "House" (No. 3) and the "Yard" (No. 5) stood under roof. The pivotal centeralalite with triangle fronton became a continuous motive in civil architecture. Wiedewelt performed a relief for decorating the gable edge. The building is now listed property and a highly recognized part of Copenhagen's cultural treasures.
