Frederiks Hospital

At Bredgade 70–72 stands the northern pavilion of Denmark’s first hospital: Frederiks Hospital. The idea of a public hospital stemmed from the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment; science, enlightenment and public health were now to be promoted in the name of His Majesty.

The entire large hospital complex was originally designed by the court architect Nikolaj Eigtved in the same Rococo style as the rest of Frederiksstaden. The new, distinguished district was King Frederik V’s grand project, and with the humility of an absolute monarch, he lent his name to the district, the church and the hospital.

Work on the hospital began in 1751 and was completed in 1757. During the project, Eigtved died and new architects had to take the master’s place. Laurids de Thurah then took the helm and was quick to impose his own Baroque stamp on Eigtved’s Rococo buildings. He added four two-storey pavilions to Frederiks Hospital; two at the hospital’s entrance from Amaliegade and two at the hospital’s entrance from Bredgade.

The pavilion at Bredgade 70–72 housed the hospital’s finance, legal and nursing departments, with elegant single rooms on the first floor facing the street and the courtyard. It was in one such private room – room no. 5 – with a window overlooking Bredgade, that the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard was admitted on 2 October 1855 as patient no. 2067. Five weeks later, the great thinker passed away and left the Copenhagen he loved so dearly.

The pavilion at Bredgade 70–72 remained an active part of Frederiks Hospital until 1910, after which the buildings were used as an artists’ colony. Later, the Maritime and Commercial Court moved in and made itself at home – with, among other things, a courtroom on the first floor and offices on the second floor, where they also adorned the walls with depictions of the Greco-Roman gods of shipping and trade.

The combination of the building’s rich history, beautiful location and the exquisite details that characterise everything from the balustrades to the gables testifies to the fact that Frederiks Hospital is a valuable piece of Danish history spanning literature, medicine and architecture.
