Kalvebod Bastion

Kalvebod Bastion is a sturdy, no-nonsense structure; beautiful and solid, built of yellow Flensburg stone. The former artillery storehouse was built in 1801, but the name Kalvebod Bastion itself dates back as far as the 1650s and the fortifications surrounding Copenhagen at that time. The endless wars against our Swedish neighbours necessitated a strong defensive structure, and Kalvebod Bastion played a crucial role in this.

As a storehouse for the stables and artillery, the building exudes history; heavy posts and rafters of Pomeranian pine and deep arched windows with green shutters. The old, large stable doors have been converted into glass sections that catch the eye and open up to Christianshavn’s green ramparts and Copenhagen’s waterfront, with a view of the inner city.

The transformation from artillery storehouse to office building was undertaken by De Danske Spritfabrikker, part of Danisco Distillers, in the 1990s. During the conversion, the distilleries left their own mark on the building by incorporating the company’s beautiful red-and-white Maltese cross into the door handles.

Although the days of the stables and distillery at Kalvebod Bastion are now long gone, the history is still palpable as you move around the atmospheric building.
